According to a historical sketch of the early Pleasant Green Baptist Church, it was founded under a brush arbor (a shaded place formed by vines and plants) by Brother and Sister Sally Bailey.
In the year of 1880, this church was organized under the leadership of Rev. Archie Wheat. A member, Brother Spiller submitted the name of the church as Oats Road Baptist Church. As the membership grew, the members later changed the name to Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church and then to Pleasant Green Baptist Church. Pleasant Green Baptist Church is one of the oldest churches in its current vicinity.
Pleasant Green has three cornerstones. Rev. R. B. Evans was the pastor when the first cornerstone was laid. Rev. E. D. Rayford was pastor when the second cornerstone was laid in 1945. Rev. J. C. Neal was the pastor for the laying of the church’s third cornerstone in 1981.
According to records, the following ministers also served as pastors of Pleasant Green since its inception: Rev. O. Hawkins, Rev. T. B. Bradley and Rev. I. B. Bowers. The actual dates of their services are not recorded.
Rev. J. C. Neal came to Pleasant Green on November 2, 1961, when the church was without a leader. A prayerful meeting was held by the deacons and members in order to vote for a new pastor. The church nominated and accepted Rev. J. C. Neal as the next leader of the church. On July 15, 1962, Rev. J. C. Neal was ordained and installed as pastor of the Pleasant Green Baptist Church located at 10341 Needham Street in Houston, Texas.
One day, Rev. J. C. Neal had a dream. He dreamed that the Lord would permit the members to move Pleasant Green from its home on Needham Street. With the support of Brother Floyd Travis, Brother William Eaton, Brother Habert North and other deacons and members the church was moved to 10912 Wallisville Road on July 1, 1977.
Because of the rapid growth in the congregation, on April 2, 1995, construction began on a 30’ X 42’ addition to the church. This included an addition to the sanctuary, cafeteria, baptistery, classrooms and pastor’s study. Later, another parking lot was added to the rear of the church to accommodate the continued growth of the church.
In October 1996, Pleasant Green made a down payment on 5½ acres of property adjacent to the church building at 10912 Wallisville Road. God blessed us to burn the mortgage to the land on August 17, 2003.
Rev. Irvin Gage Sr., served as associate Pastor in Charge with Rev. J. C. Neal and was installed as the Pastor of Pleasant Green in November 2003. That day marked a “New Beginning” and fresh opportunity to build on the successes of our predecessors. Under his leadership, souls were brought to Christ. Rev. Gage was a faithful servant until he became ill and resigned on September 27, 2010.
Rev. Stephen Welsh was appointed as Minister in Charge until a pastor could be chosen. On May 28, 2011, Rev. Dennis Fuller Jr., was elected pastor of Pleasant Green Baptist Church. His installation ceremony was held on September 4, 2011. Pastor Dennis Fuller’s vision was to enlighten Christian men and women in the work of the Lord. He served as pastor until March 10, 2014.
On May 27, 2015, Rev. S. K. White was elected pastor of Pleasant Green Baptist Church. When asked about his vision for the church, Pastor White said, “Our vision for Pleasant Green Baptist Church is reaching the community and surrounding areas one person at a time with the Glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ and developing disciples. It is also our mission to aid in the welfare of others. It is with this vision that we totally rely on the word of God as our guide, source, hope and strength.”
Because of rapidly growing industrial development around the church at 10912 Wallisville Road, under the leadership of Pastor S. K. White the members purchased 7 acres of land at 7005 Uvalde Road, Houston, Texas to relocate the church. The church site at 10912 Wallisville Road was sold in April 2018 and our last church service at the site was on March 31, 2020. We moved to 13334 Wallisville Road, on April 7, 2020.
On December 8, 2024, we held our very first service in our new place of worship, located at 7005 Uvalde Rd, Houston, TX 77049. The fourth cornerstone was designed and printed under the leadership of Pastor S. K. White. We give all glory to God for His faithfulness and provision, and we extend our deepest thanks to our beloved Pastor for visionary leadership and unwavering dedication.
